What are the benefits of foam board insulation?
In general, board type does not have a significantly impact on the effectiveness of insulation. In other words, needle-punch and cut-face fiberglass boards perform similarly in regards to insulation ratings. This is partially due to the material being made from a man-made fiber that will stop conduction once it gets into contact with air. However, because of its low cost and accessibility better thermal performance can be achieved with a cavity fill cavity foam treatment. One example would be blown in cellulose insulation which conserves energy by creating an extra layer for heat retention.
According to the EPA, insulation can save homeowners as much as 43 percent of home heating and cooling costs
In addition to lowering monthly utility bills, foam board insulation can also provide a built-in sound barrier for those homes that sit near busy roads or industrial work sites. If you have a room with a large amount of exterior foot traffic then consider how noisy the space is during normal activities. From an energy standpoint, installing foam board insulation will stop air from moving around which means lower energy consumption throughout the house.
Blown in cellulose insulation works better than traditional fiberglass board because it fills any vacant area through tiny air pockets. In turn, this creates a tighter seal so there is no place for heat to escape from your home. In contrast, fiberglass has been known to leave gaps in the coldest areas of a home due to its man-made structure not being able to fit in small openings.

How does foam board insulation work?
Foam board insulation, unlike other types of insulation, works by creating an air and vapour barrier that fills in all the gaps and spaces around studs and joists. It literally plugs the gaps left over from construction which also helps prevents moisture build-up. The foam boards work similarly to a sponge; they take up space, which reduces any cold spots in your home (which is surprisingly common). This type of insulation can be placed anywhere within a building including ceilings or below floor level surfaces such as crawl spaces.
Foam board insulation is environmentally friendly because it's has no CFCs meaning it will not harm the ozone layer if it escapes to ground level or into waterways and septic tanks. Unlike regular insulators , foam boards do not harm the environment when they become old, this makes it a great choice for those who are concerned with energy conservation and environmental responsibility.
Foam board insulation is manufactured from expanded polystyrene (EPS), or extruded polystyrene (XPS) that has been laminated to a thin sheet of facing material such as paper, aluminium foil, or plastic film. This type of insulation is very effective at stopping air penetration and most boards have a density from 35 to 120 kg per cubic metre with an R-value ranging from 3.3 to 4.5 per inch (R-values are used to determine the effectiveness of insulation).
Foam board insulation is typically available at building supply stores and hardware stores, but it may be required to pre-order your supply as they can prove difficult to keep in stock.
